COMPONENT 1: SUSTAINING HOUSEHOLD LIFE
The purpose of this component was to help people re-establish themselves on their blocks, including access to nearby health clinics, and to help prepare communities for any future emergencies.
Objectives :
1. Assist communities and families to manage the transition from the emergency phase to the commencement of house reconstruction, through the provision of interim tools and materials packages, training and direct assistance, for shelter construction, water and sanitation. Tools and material packages will be selected so as to be re-usable during reconstruction, and not represent lost investment.
2. Help ensure quality of reconstruction, through awareness-raising and training in improved earthquake resistance construction techniques.
3. Develop Community Disaster Preparedness Plans, utilising local institutions so that resilience is developed at both physical and social levels.
4. Repair lightly damaged sub-district health facilities where these are encountered during program rollout.
Quick Impact :
The program has raised awareness of simple earthquake resistance techniques in construction; provided assistance in preparation for broader Government reconstruction efforts through provision of training, small tools and materials grants; selection, training and engagement of Village Facilitators.
Medium and longer-term :
Ongoing assistance to villages to ensure improved earthquake resilience of construction, complementing Government of Indonesia and donor reconstruction programs.
