COMPONENT 2: RESTORING LOCAL INCOMES

The purpose of this component is to re-establish Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the craft and construction sectors, and to assist the housing sector by improving and expanding the materials supply chain.

Objectives :
1.     Assisted small and medium-sized community-level enterprises to recover, through the repair of facilities, replacement of equipment, and application for working capital through normal bank channels. If credit is not available on a timely basis, an alternative interim micro-credit scheme may be necessary, and would form part of the component.
2.     Assisted materials suppliers and small contractors to improve quality and prepare for the upcoming boom.

Quick Impact:

Rehabilitation of lightly damaged market structures and provision of temporary structures; identification of simple equipment and reconstruction packages for affected SMEs in the craft and construction sectors; advice on credit options.

Medium and longer-term:

Quality improvement of housing construction supply chain through targeted training and incentives to ‘unskilled labour ’, small contractors, and materials manufacture and suppliers; ongoing technical support to assist in the recovery of craft export sector.


Achievements:

•    1,571 households or small businesses have received start up capital grants to recover their businesses.
•    5,068 households or small businesses have participated in capacity building trainings.
•    6,489 households or small businesses have been assisted with assets.
•    3,799 households or small business have accessed informal credit mechanisms to re-start businesses.
•    3,085 businesses have been supported to produce business development plans.
•    144 work premises, production facilities and small industry waste management systems have been   rehabilitated or constructed.
