Almost Three Years After the Earth Quake

Almost three years after the earthquake struck Yogyakarta and Central Java, more than 100,000 people in the affected areas have been directly assisted through YCAP activities. This includes benefits such as improved water and sanitation, increased access to health and education services and facilities support for livelihoods restoration and capacity building in earthquake resistant construction techniques.

Twenty-nine schools in 26 villages have been assisted, providing improved access to schooling for 1,648 boys and 1,511 girls.  Equipment and furniture has been supplied to twenty-seven schools.  The number of teachers benefiting from program activities totals 262, of which 107 are male and 155 are female.

Participating communities have increased resilience through improved incomes and access to resources and services. Nearly 40,000 people in 65 villages have participated in construction training and implementation for water supply, MCA and schools. More than 2,863 households in 14 villages (over 11,000 people) have benefited from improved water and sanitation facilities.

Communities were involved in program planning and delivery, and have had the capacity to undertake earthquake resistant construction following the end of the program. Seven local and five international NGOs, as well as two local consultants and four local contractors have received training in earthquake resistant construction techniques.  Over 12,000 individuals have received related training. More than 1,500 community meetings and consultations have been undertaken for both construction and livelihoods activities, involving around 21,160 men and 19,836 women from villages in Klaren and Bantul.
